Rainer weiss

Rainer Weiss was born in Berlin, where his father was a doctor and psychoanalyst and his mother an actress. His father was of Jewish descent, and the family fled Nazism to the United States. After schooling in New York, Weiss studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his doctor's degree in 1962 Rainer Weiss er en opprinnelig tysk eksperimentalfysiker og ekspert på laserfysikk. Han var en av initiativtagerne og lederne under konstruksjonen av gravitasjonsbølgedetektoren LIGO. I 2017 ble han tildelt Nobelprisen i fysikk sammen med Kip Thorne og Barry Barish.

By 1972 Rainer Weiss, a physicist at MIT, had completed an in depth analysis of many of the major sources of noise that such an interferometer would encounter, and had developed a detailed design for a gravitational wave detector that would surmount those noises. This became a blueprint for two decades of R&D leading to LIGO.
